July 18, 2008- Lindenwood University will be represented next month by two athletes at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Alumni Donald Thomas will be one of the favorites in the high jump competition along with having one of the more unique stories at the Games. Sean McLelland, who is still in school at Lindenwood, will compete against the world's top shooters in the International Skeet competition.
Thomas, who is representing the Bahamas, was a junior varsity basketball player less than three years ago at Lindenwood. On a dare, he attempted the high jump one day and cleared seven-feet. Two days later, wearing sneakers and gym shorts, Thomas was a member of the Lions track and field team and he shattered a 13-year old meet record at Eastern Illinois. Less than two months after taking up the sport, he finished second at the NAIA National Indoor Championship and helped the Lions win the national title.
After graduating in 2006 from Lindenwood, Thomas used his final year of eligibility at Auburn, where he won a national championship at the 2007 NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. Last fall, he made his mark nationally by winning the World Championship in Japan. After the Olympic Games, Thomas will look to continue his basketball career, as he recently earned a tryout with the Harlem Globetrotters.
McLelland will represent the United States after finishing second at the Olympic Trials to capture the final spot on the team. McLelland was second after the Fall Selection event, but a bad showing during the second day of the spring trials dropped him to third-place. On the final day of the shoot, McLelland hit 48 of 50 targets to move into a tie with Mark Weeks for second heading into the final round. In the finals, he calmly hit 24 of 25 targets, two more than Weeks to earn the trip to China.
McLelland is the top shooter to come out of Lindenwood's shooting team, which is the top collegiate program in the country. Lindenwood has won the last five ACUI collegiate national championships. McLelland was a part of those national title teams in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and he had top-five individual finishes all three years.
The Lindenwood athletics department is one of the largest and most successful programs at any level in the country. Next year, the school will sponsor 44 varsity athletic programs, 28 of which are competed at the Olympic level, including many of which are only varsity sports at a handful of schools across the country. These athletic programs have captured 32 national championships over the last seven school years, and Lindenwood has finished in the top-10 in the NAIA Directors, Cup for the last 10 years for having one of the top athletic programs at that level in the nation.
